LIVE RĪGA 2014

Have you heard of a city called Riga? Where is Riga? Why is Riga important this year?

The capital and largest city of Latvia on the Gulf of Riga, an inlet of the Baltic Sea bordering on Latvia and Estonia. Founded as a trading post on a site originally inhabited by Baltic tribes, the city became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1282 and later passed to Poland (1581), Sweden (1621), and Russia (1710). Population: 722,000.

The definition of Riga from some Internet dictionaries may seem very fancy. It might be a very lovely city to spend your free time since there are beautiful places to visit, wonderful Jugendstil style buildings to see, clean sea to bath and nice people to meet. The perks of visiting Latvia is that the most people are bilingual. The tourist has to know either the basics of English or Russian to make others understand them.

What is LIVE RĪGA 2014?

This year, 2014, Riga is the capital city of Europe’s culture. In honor of this title, there are many organizations who have came together to plan cultural activities in Riga for the whole year when Riga has the title “Capital city of Europe’s culture”.

If you are interested to spend your summer in quality but you don’t know where, then there is a chance that Riga is the right answer for you!

It’s all about discipline

These days we can find many books or articles about self-improvement and how to be successful and the writers give many advises and tips reminding you that you are perfect and there is nothing to change and so on. bla bla bla… I have read many things, articles and even some pages on many books but I have never completed any because they are SO boring. throughout many years, I have come to one conclusion and that is not surprising – the key to success is DISCIPLINE, yes discipline.

tumblr_mrlllerKq01s6kr0wo1_500

This discipline is one and important thing about you that you can influence – it’s just the way you are thinking. It’s all about your priorities and how you organize your time and emotions. If you are not disciplined and can’t finish your homework or can tidy your room for one year, then probably you are only a slave to your emotions and you don’t think what is better for you. Discipline is to win the battle with your self, it’s not to give up your emotions , not to be impulsive but to think and analyze what’s best for you.

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

1 Peter 4:17 (NLT)

Next morning when you wake up, think what you did yesterday, ask yourself: what did I do and is it good enough to pat your shoulder?. Get stuff done today, because tomorrow will be even busier with your life. Be self-conscious, think, be aware of everything and your self.

The Trust And Bigger Picture.

Our world evolutions comes together with .. well, some dark things. Democracy may not be the as it seems, because its main power does not belong to people any more, but belogs to few, who have unlimited power and they abuse it. To fight this “darkness” as we can call it, the information has to be free and people shouldn’t be punished when are defending our rights. Also, we need to banish the ignorance around us and keep our ears, eyes and minds open.

There are few documentaries I Just watched on youtube and I am not entirely surprised about all this, but there were few thing I didn’t know before.

Cheers!

Have a good day.

GISHWHES

GISHWHES is a  scavenger hunt hosted by actor Misha Collins (best known from starring in series Supernatural) . It is comprised of a global community of thousands of individuals (+94 countries) that “come together” for a week online once a year, form international teams, and then go out into the real world and create “art” the likes of which the world has never seen. Last year the Guinness World Record was broken for the Largest Scavenger Hunt with 14,580 participants!

This content is captured as videos or images to memorialize the annual Gishwhes experience. Art pieces range from the touching: “Take a picture of you hugging a war veteran” or “Create a video of you visiting a children’s hospital and giving a puppet show” to the weirdly sublime: “an image of a formal tea party replete with parasols, silverware and a string quartet situated in a junkyard or garbage dump” or “a fully dressed storm trooper cleaning a pool next to a sunbather”.

Here you can see some pictures from the previous GISHWHES participants.

Usual Latvian

Hello there!

europe_pol_2004So, today topic is Latvians. And the first question is – what is Latvian? Is it a herb on animal? Where does it live or eat? The answer to this question is simple – Latvian is a citizen of a small country called Latvia which is located in north Europe and it is one of three Baltic States. Our beloved neighbor countries are Lithuania and Estonia which are two remaining Baltic States. So, Latvians are also called Baltics. There are about 2,272,300 inhabitants in here but only 59% are Latvians and that is not much.

To make it more not-so-boring, I will just make a little list about us – Latvians. (The list of stereotypes, but not stereotypes)

  1. Hardworking. Yes, hardworking. It is in our nature and I guess, that is because throughout the history, we were peasants and does peasant do? It work hard so he can survive and live a good life.
  2. Racist, yes, most of us are. And I think it is because we are a pretty closed society thanks to the soviet times. So, the racism is like a defense mechanism, because unknown means it can be dangerous and what we do to the unknown – we become a little bit (or a lot) aggressive.
  3. Most Latvians are known for their hospitality. If you are guest to our house, you will be fed and treated kindly, because we feel an obligation to treat you well.
  4. Latvians are also tough and that is thanks to our climate and history as peasants. We can work long hours; we can get to point A to point B in -24 C and not complain about it.
  5. Latvians are not ambitious. Even word “ambitious” in Latvian sounds like a bad thing. Ambitious people are considered rude and mean.
  6. Our language means a lot to us. Is is considered as our main identity and all language related topics are watched closely like referendum about Russian language as our second language.
  7. Latvians fear change. Is is considered as something unknown even dangerous like The Euro topic. We don’t embrace change, the old is safe, there is nothing better than old, ggod, well known things.
  8. There is a joke that typical Latvians always in a bad mood.
  9. Typical Latvian is very patient.
  10. Most of Latvians on Saturday (or in any free day) will get ready like in a typical work day just to go to the mall for some milk and eggs.
  11. Latvians LOVE hockey!
  12. Typical Latvian is always broke.
  13. All Latvians lock the doors when go out. And it is dangerous to leave open house, because your all stuff will be robbed.
  14. Some say that Latvians are always jealous, but that’s  not entirely true – some of just are not that ambitious to care.
  15. Some say that typical Latvian is indecisive. (If you have your two favourite flavors of ice cream in store, you won’t be able to choose, how could you. So, you will just take two ice creams or the one which is cheaper.)
  16. Typical Latvian will always look after their money and will make economical conscious decisions.. because he is always broke.
  17. Typical Latvian doesn’t trust businessmen. He or she is considered as an evil wizard with dark powers because nobody can make that much money to maintain their business because nobody is spending money.
  18. Typical Latvian can sing and some of them can dance. (Our singing culture is advanced, even we don’t win any big singing contests.)
  19. Typical Latvian is tall, thin, blonde and with blue eyes (most common stereotype, but Latvians are in all shapes and colors, but here you can find many blonde people).

So, that’s it for the list of typical Latvians (all the points are true, but not in all cases).

Yeah, I almost forgot. The other author of this blog (Signe), as requested, did a little experiment on Omegle (the pictures below). She asked to them: ”Do you know where is Latvia?” And it was interesting to see the results. Some strangers were nice and some weren’t. These aren’t the results you can get scientific proofs, but it’s still interesting.

Book Review – The Fault In Our Stars

This review is written about a book called “The Fault In Our Stars” by John Green.

The Fault in Our Stars (often abbreviated as TFiOS) is the fourth solo novel by author John Green, published in January 2012. The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee.

– Wikipedia

TFiOS is a story that makes you realize how fragile the life is and how one person can change your whole world. In this book, we meet sixteen-year-old Hazel who has depression and is living her life, waiting for her final day that will come faster than to other her peers.

Her mother is trying to help her, forcing her to join a support group for young teenagers like her. She doesn’t  like the group because it makes her feel powerless until a guy named Augustus joins in one public attend.

Augustus is the type of guy Hazel would never guess to approach her. She falls for his charm and his gentle way of trying to get to know her.

But at the same time, Hazel is afraid to let Augusts too close to her because she knows that he will get hurt  at the end. It takes them time to figure everything out but they find a way to work it out.

Story ends with an unpredictable twist and leaves you breathless. The power of books and their influence on people.

John Green’s vocabulary is voluminous and the word choose is right for teenage audience.

The Knife – band from Sweden which can make good music

Hello there!

Recently i have been looking for new and good music bands because it’s summer break before first year of university. And I have found some good bands I can proudly share with.. and one of them is The Knife.

e4ccae30be062b1bfe89d53c950736d5

The Knife is a Swedish electronic music band. I like that they are not making the traditional electronic music but something way much better – like art for your ears. Also, you can do absolutely anything while listening this music and I think it is great background music while you are having road trips around your country or just laying on the green grass in a cloudy day with just earphones on your ears.

The members of The Kife are brother and sister – Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson. They don’t really make public appearances even if they have won big awards like Swedish Grammis, but I think that’s the part of their philosophy or protest against the growing music industry, but in my opinion, they should send their message a bit differently like with music, obviously, and their music videos.

Together band has 4 studio albums and most recent one which was released on 5 April 2013 and it’s called Shaking the Habitual. It’s way different from other artist albums but it is still enjoyable. One of my favourite songs is Raging Lung which is amazing because of Karins voice, used musical instruments and the harmony which should not be there but is.

And, yeah, I think you should check this band out and see for yourselves.
